What is rising damp?

Rising damp is caused by moisture containing natural formed salts rising from the ground through capillary action. Salts and minerals in the ground are normally harmless, but when combined with water these salts dissolve and become acidic substances.

Rising Damp can be evident in the form of staining on internal walls, blistering and peeling paint and salt accumulation up to 1 metre high from the floor. If left untreated, Rising Damp can cause serious damage to a building’s structural integrity including damage to timber floors and floor joists, architraves and skirting boards.

How to repair Rising Damp

Accurately diagnosing the damp problem is important. In order to do this, a thorough inspection of the building is necessary. Correct diagnosis can prevent unnecessary expense.
